Disastrous effects of Prosopis Juliflora and the need for eradication

28/09/2016 13:40

The non native Prosopis Juliflora popularly known as "Seemai karuvela maram" (Tamil)  was introduced in Tamil Nadu especially in Ramanathapuram District as fuel wood weed. But then had spread  to other districts of TN. This weed has its roots upto 80 to 90 feet under the ground and evacuates the ground water . Also the leaves suck the moisture in atmosphere , making the climate and environment dry. This leads to drought. There could be an alternate for the fuel wood and this weed should be eradicated. Also planting more environment friendly trees would prevent erosion, and would boost up the water requirements for day to day use, drinking and irrigation.
